174 The city of “Old Malatya3 which is currently named as Battalgazi is a county center of Malatya. Population of this county has moved from the old city, to today’s “Ine-w Malatya”” at the beginning 19 th. Century A. D Important geographical position of the city has provided a continuous co&mercial and cultural development from the early ages to the Islaidc and Turkish periods.. The city that.took place within the Byzastinean borders until 11 th. Century A.D. and has become Turkish from 12 th. Century A.D. on. Urban constructions have increased during the Seljuk, Healuk and Ottoman periods, according to the ¥ritten sources, siaay religious and civil structures have been built; however most of these bul dings have sot been survived.. During the observations in the city, 11 mosques, İ open praying area (namazgah), 1 school (siedrese), 1 caravanserai 1, I fountain.. 5 tombs and ruins of 2 t cabs fere determined. Besides, soae important stone epitaphs and architectural decoration elements that previously belong to the ruined buildings, as v?eil as gravestones have hs&ii observed. Part of these finds belong to Seljuk &nd soiie of then belong to Ottoman periods. However, except a few epitaphs fro®. Meailukiaa period (14- 15th. centuries AD) no other structures have survived.
