| 1847-49 yılları arasında Abdülmecid ‘ in izni ile H.Sophia’da gerçekleştirilen mozaik onarım çalışmaları, gerek kilisenin mozaiklerinin korunması ve günümüze ulaşması, gerekse Osmanlı Döneminde yapılmış ilk mozaik restorasyonu olması açısından çok önemlidir. İtalyan mimarlar Gaspare ve Giuseppe Fossati, restorasyonun ilk aşamasında, daha önce sıvanarak kapatılmış mozaikleri temizleyerek açığa çıkarmışlardır. Ortaya çıkarılan mozaiklerin hemen çizimleri yapılmış, eskizlere notlar ve ölçüler eklenmek suretiyle belgeleme evresi tamamlanmıştır. Daha sonra mozaikler demir çivilerle duvara tutturularak sağlamlaştırılmıştır. Eksik kısımlar alçı ve harç ile doldurulmuştur. Bundan sonra harcın üzeri boyanmıştı r. Fossati ‘ lerin temizlik, sağlamlaştırma ve tamamlama şeklinde gerçekleştirdikleri onarımlar, mozaiklerin belgelenmesini de içerdiğinden önemlidir. Çünkü günümüze ulaşamamış mozaikleri bu çalışma sırasında yapılan eskizlerden öğrenmekteyiz. Bunun yanısıra, temizlenip onarılan ve sağlamlaşt ı r ı lan mozaiklerin, kolayca açılabilecek şekilde kapatılmış olması da 1847-49 onarımlarının değerini artırmaktadır. | |||
