Libidinal Coğrafyalar: The Lustful Turk ve A Night in a Moorish Harem Romanlarında Ötekinin Etnopornografik İnşası

Öz

Batı sömürgeciliği sosyal, siyasal, ekonomik etkilerinin yanı sıra öteki toplumlar üzerinde kültürel alanlarda çeşitli söylemsel mekanizmaların üretildiği bir içeriğe sahiptir. Bu söylem üretim mekanizmalarından birisi de sömürgeci toplumlar tarafından üretilen erotik metinlerdir. Bu metinler aracılığıyla sömürgeci toplumlar öteki toplumlara ait toplumsal cinsiyet ve cinsellik normlarını kullanarak kendileri ve ötekiler arasındaki farkları vurgulamışlar ve kendi kimlik oluşturma süreçlerine cinselliğe ilişkin anlayış farklarını da eklemişlerdir. Bu yolla hem öteki toplumlar hem de bu toplumların yaşadıkları coğrafyalar cinsel olarak fetişleştirilmiş ve bilinçdışı arzu üretim mekanizmaları oluşturulmuştur. Bu çalışmada Doğu toplumları hakkında yazılan İngiliz literatürüne ait erotik metinler üzerinde durulmuş ve bu metinlerin Batı’daki sosyal, siyasal, bilimsel gelişmeler ile ilişkisi analiz edilmiştir. Analiz konusu olarak 19. yüzyılda dönemin Viktoryen ahlakına uygun olarak yazılmış ve yazarları bilinmeyen iki eser seçilmiştir. Bu eserler yoluyla Doğu’ya yönelik toplumsal cinsiyet, beden ve cinsellik konularını içeren söylemler ortaya konmuştur. Metinler temalara ayrılarak analiz edilmiştir. Sonuç olarak, erotik metinlerin Doğu’ya ilişkin Batılı bilginin inşasında Doğu toplumlarının ahlaki yapıları üzerinden sömürgeciliğin meşrulaştırıldığı ve ahlaki olarak Batı üstünlüğünün vurgulandığı görülmüştür.

Öz

In addition to its social, political and economic effects, Western colonialism has a content in which various discursive mechanisms are produced in cultural fields on other societies. One of these discourse production mechanisms is erotic texts produced by colonizers. Through these texts, colonial societies emphasized differences between themselves and others by using the gender and sexuality norms of other societies and differences in understanding of sexuality in their own identity formation processes. Through these texts, both other societies and their geographies are sexually fetishized, and unconscious desire production mechanisms are created. In this study, erotic texts from English literature are discussed and relationship of these texts with Western social, political and scientific developments of this period are analyzed. Two novels that were written in the 19th century and have unknown authors due to the Victorian morality of the period were chosen as the subject of analysis. Through these works, discourses about the East that include gender, body, and sexuality issues are discussed. The texts are analyzed by dividing them into themes. As a result, it is seen that erotic texts legitimize colonialism through moral structures and emphasize the moral superiority of the West in the construction of Western knowledge about the East.
