-138- VI- ABSTRACT Selimiye Mosque which is the “masterpiece” of the Architect Sinan is deco rated under the supervision of Sinan himself. The symmetrical placements of the ornaments are in coherence with the symmetrical plan of the building itself. The compositions are formed in accordance with the shapes of the surfaces which they decorate. The wall decorations of Selimiye Mosque constitute a synthesis of the styles of the artists Baba Nakkaş, Şahkulu and Karamemi, and they are in a striking resemblance to the other architectual decorations, and the ornaments of the books, carpets and textures which all belong to the “style of the time”. The designs created by the Palace artists are first used to decorate the books, then applied in several other places with various techniques and materials. The Palace style of the capital is magestically presented in this magnificent Edirne building. The wall decorations of Selimiye Mosque and the ornaments which are in the styles of rumî-hatayî or reed (all classified in the “style of the time”) like in the geometrical decorations, are all in harmony with the principal of infinitum. Several styles are formed on the basis of rather small number of geometrical schemes. The patterns differed by the evolution of styles, but the underlying geometrical schemes remained the same which have been employed in numerous compositions in various sizes.
