| İtalya’nın Como kentinden doktor, hümanist, tarihçi, piskopos ve koleksiyoner Paolo Giovio (1483-1552) Rönesans dünyasının ve papalığın önemli şahıslarından biridir. Daha gençlik yıllarından itibaren dönemin önemli sanatçılarını, filozoflarını, din ve devlet adamlarını yakından tanıma fırsatı bulmuştur. Papalık ile kurduğu sıkı dostluk ile birlikte, ertelemek zorunda kaldığı hayallerini gerçekleştirme fırsatı bulmuştur. Tarih, filoloji ve sanat alanında eğitim görmek iste de ailesine karşı olan sorumlulukları nedeniyle tıp eğitimi almıştır. Topladığı koleksiyon, döneminin en geniş portre koleksiyonunu teĢkil etmektedir. Bu yüksek lisans tez çalışmasında Paolo Giovio’nun 1575 tarihli Elogia Virorum Bellica Virtute Illustrium (Seçkin Adamların Cesurca Savaşları Üzerine Özdeyişler) isimli eserinde yer alan 18 adet Türk portresi konu edilmiştir. Araştırma monografik inceleme özelliği taşımaktadır. Eserde yer alan portreler, Paolo Giovio’nun Como’daki portre koleksiyonundaki eserlerden ağaç baskı tekniği ile 1570’li yıllarda Tobias Stimmer tarafından kopya edilmiştir. Ağaç baskı tekniği ile yapılmış olan hem portreler hem de portrelerin çevreleyen çerçevelerdeki kompozisyon düzeni üslup ve ikonografik açıdan değerlendirilmiştir. Çalışmanın nihayetlenmesiyle birlikte, yüksek lisans tez çalışmasının amacı, 1575 tarihli “Elogia” isimli eserde yer alan Türklere ait portrelerin bilim dünyasına tanıtılmasıdır. Elogia, daha sonraki Türkleri konu alan kitapların birinci kaynaklarından biri olmasının yanı sıra Avrupa resmindeki doğulu ve Türk imgesinin temelini oluşturan eserlerden en önemlisidir. Elogia isimli eserde yer alan şahsiyetlerin kıyafetleri ve silahlarının aslına uygun olup olmadığına değinilmiştir. | Paolo Giovio (1483-1552), physician, humanist, historian, bishop and collector from Como, Italy, is one of the most important figures of the Renaissance world and the papacy. From his younger years, he had the opportunity to get to know the important artists, philosophers, religious and statesmen of the period. Along with the close friendship he had established with the papacy, he had the opportunity to realize his dreams, which he had to postpone. Although he wanted to get education in history, philology, and art but he studied medicine because of his responsibilities to his family. The collection he collected constitutes the largest collection of portraits of his era. In this master’s thesis, 18 Turkish portraits which take place in Paolo Giovio’s 1575 work Elogia Virorum Bellica Virtute Illustrium (Maxims on the Brave Battles of Distinguished Men) were discussed. The research has the feature of monographic examination. The portraits in the work were copied by Tobias Stimmer in the 1570s using the technique of woodcut from works in Paolo Giovio’s portrait collection in Como. Both the portraits and the composition order of the portraits in the surrounding frames, which were made with the technique of woodcut, were evaluated from a stylistic and iconographic point of view. With the completion of the work, the aim of the master’s thesis is to introduce the portraits of Turks to the scientific world contained in the work “Elogia” dated 1575. In addition to being one of the first sources of books on later Turks, Elogia is the most important of the works that form the basis of the easterner and Turkish image in European painting. It was mentioned whether the clothes and weapons of the personalities featured in the work entitled Elogia are in accordance with the original.
