| 19. yy İstanbul’unda sosyal hayat yüzyıllarca hüküm sürmüş muazzam bir imparatorluğun asıl yönlerini anlamak açısından gerçekten önemlidir. Aynı zamanda, sonuçları bugüne kadar ulaşmış olan ve üstelik, görünüşe bakılırsa, yalnızca maddi değil manevi kültürüyle de biz insanoğuHarının geleceğine de yön verebilecek çok güçlü adaylar olan bazı “değişmez” seyirler altında, ciddi ve hızlı değişimlere zorlanan bir dünyanın bütününe dair net bir izlenim edinmek açısından da önemlidir. Bugünü ve yarını gerçek anlamda kavramanın ve hatta bu konuda ancak zayıf bir fikre ulaşmanın, geçmişi derinlemesine araştırmaktan geçtiğini çoğu kez duymuşuzdur.Bu noktada ihmale gelmez olan şudur ki insanoğlunun ve (bir bilim ya da disiplin olarak, adı ne olursa olsun) tarihin kendisinin aşikar sınırları içerisinde mümkün olabilecek en bilimsel araçlar yoluyla geçmişi derinlemesine araştırabilmek için, takip etmekte olduğumuz tarihin seyirlerinin ve ulaştığımız sonuçların yanlış olmadığına dair bizi ikna edebilecek belli bazı kapasitelere sahip olmak kaçınılmazdır. Bu düşünceden hareketle biz de ana eser olarak Charles White’ın Three Years in Constantinople’ını (İstanbul’da üç yıl) seçtik. Zira, deneyimimiz ve tüm çalışmanın ön hazırlık aşamasının da bize gösterdiği üzere eser, bizi (az önce bahsini ettiğim) amaçlarımıza, ikna edici bir derecede ulaştırmak konusunda üzerine düşeni yapacaktır. | Social life in Istanbul in the 19th century is indeed essential in terms of understanding thevery essences of a great empire of centuries which consists of many different nationalities. Itis also essential to make a clear impression of the whole world being forced to grave and rapidchanges under some ?concrete? courses whose very tips we have reached today and areseemingly well-built candidates to direct the further future of ours as the whole human beingswith its not only material culture but its spiritual culture as well. One has heard many timesthat the present and future cannot but be fathomed, even inferred to a vague degree, byprobing into the past.What can?t be ignored at this point is that to be able to probe into the past by means of asmuch scientific ways as would be possible within the permitted limits of human being andhistory itself (as a science or discipline whatever one might call), it is inevitable to have somecertain capacities by which you may feel content that the course(s) of history you arefollowing is not the wrong one(s) as well as the results you are getting at. And accordingly,we have chosen as major work the Three Years in Constantinople by Charles White as westrongly believed by our experience and preliminary stages of the whole work that it reallywill do its bits to furnish us with the purposes in mind (the ones we have just mentioned) to asatisfying extent.
